Peak Aircraft - The Peak Aerospace Me 109R is a series of German replica warbird ultralight aircraft designed by Tassilo Bek and originally produced by Peak Aerospace in Pasewalk. The company has since changed its name to Classic Planes GmbH. First flown in 1991, the design is 80 percent the scale of the WWII-era Messerschmitt Bf 109 and is available as a custom building kit or as an off-the-shelf aircraft.
The aircraft is designed to comply with the International Aeronautical Federation ultralight regulations. It has cantilevered low wings, a single-seat enclosed cockpit, retractable conventional landing gear and a single engine in tractor configuration.

The first copy was inspired by Bek's inspection of a Loehle 5151 Mustang class AirVture fighter in the late 80's. He was impressed by the size of the warbird, but he wanted a German aircraft, so he went home and set about designing a replica of the Me 109.

The first prototype, registered D-MBAK, was a wooden construction powered by a Hirth 2704 making just 40 hp (30 kW) and first flew in 1991. , but Bek started a second prototype based on lessons learned in 1992. A second aircraft, registered D-MYBB, made its maiden flight in 1992 but was lost in an accident that same year. Bek's third prototype, the D-MNBP, came out around 1994 and led to sales of other kits.
Bek flew a home-built version of the Me 109 in 1996, backed by a Hirth F30 and later converted by Subaru to become the prototype for the Me 109R kit aircraft. Bek sold the company and the new owners stopped development of the Me 109. In 2003, Christian Gel bought the project and continued to develop the aircraft, which was officially launched in 2004. Since then, production has been on-demand.
Currt's production version, the Me 109R, was made of composite materials. It has a wingspan of 8.10 m (26.6 ft) and a wingspan of 10.53 m.

The plane has been a feature of Disney California Adventure since the park opened in 2001. Originally based at the intersection of Condor Flats and Grizzly Peak, the aircraft is silver and red and has a theme similar to the Condor Flats Air Tour company. Its original purpose was to immerse park visitors in a desert airfield themed around the condominium area of the Condor. The Condor Flats area was originally part of the Golden State Open House area, which was themed as a desert airport and proving ground celebrating California's aviation history.
The "Golden State" section was decommissioned in 2012 and its three sections were split into separate sections as part of the park's renovation. Portions of Condor Flats were incorporated into the Grizzly Peak area in 2015 to become Grizzly Peak Airfield.

Existing buildings have been remodeled to accommodate the new location. The planes and hangars survived, but not before the reconstruction of the site's famous airships. The plane resurfaced as a Grizzly Park Service plane when the walls of the building collapsed after extensive renovations were completed in 2015. In keeping with the national park-inspired theme, the plane is now tan with red accents and has the fictional Grizzly Peak Park Service logo on the tail.
The plane is located near the monorail and below the Grizzly Peak boardwalk, which was rebuilt when the Condor Flats were demolished. A secondary billboard depicts fly fishers in the flowing water at the bottom of Grizzly Peak. Billboards read "Grizzly's Peak," "Wonderful Wonderland," and "Yours to Enjoy."
After spending time behind building walls, the refurbished plane has resurfaced. By day, the plane looks the same as it did when it was unveiled in 2015. At night, however, bright lights beamed from the cockpit, revealing a new intrigue in this part of Open House history.
The plane is located near the monorail and below the Grizzly Peak boardwalk, which was rebuilt when the Condor Flats were demolished.
